The National Library’s statutory mandate, in place since 1958, is to collect, organise, preserve and make accessible the nation’s published legacy. We also seek to promote and inculcate knowledge of the island’s history and multicultural heritage by collecting early documentation and unique materials – such as handwritten manuscripts, maps, letters and diaries – that tell of life in Singapore and the region before the state’s independence. In addition, the National Library provides the largest public collection of reference materials and reference services to support the Singapore population’s knowledge aspirations. These collections and services are accessible through the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library. The National Library also showcases a variety of exhibitions covering topics surrounding arts and heritage.
